We specialize in ethnobotanical native plants, but also grow some pollinator and landscape favorites. Why native? It's not because they have deeper roots, and it's not because they require less maintenance. Both of these things are sometimes true for native plants, and sometimes not. We specialize in native plants because they are what our wildlife have evolved with and adapted to use. The ecosystem services provided by the Eastern Deciduous Forest biome have developed in a feedback loop with the flora and fauna that have found their way here through natural dispersal, and maintaining these ecosystem services requires more native plants and fewer sterile spaces. As primary producers, the native plants appropriate to a place are the foundation of local and global biodiversity.
But, it's not all about nature. We believe that it's in our own best interest as humans to cultivate plants that we use as well as preserve ecosystem functioning so that we can continue to thrive with the services upon which we depend. Yes, a cadre of caterpillars may defoliate your spicebush one year, and a squadron of squirrels may take all your hazelnuts the next... but these are good signs that the native plants you put in your yard are helping to support you with ecosystem services both directly and indirectly.
We offer over a hundred species of native ethnobotanical plants and will continue to offer more species as we find regional seed sources. All plants grown and sold by ANP are responsibly and ethically sourced. Increasingly, our plants are open-pollinated, straight species natives grown from seed, though we do also sell some species that are propagated by cutting. The source of all new species acquisitions is recorded and provenance is available upon request.
